Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
